My Team: Schoemann Plastic Surgery

Campaign has ended.

Schoemann Plastic Surgery Center of Encinitas, CA. Founded by double board-certified and fellowship-trained plastic surgeon Dr. Mark Schoemann, our facility is focused on creating artistic, natural results that help our patients meet their aesthetic goals. Located within the prestigious North Coast Health Center, Schoemann Plastic Surgery utilizes proven, advanced surgical techniques and unprecedented experience to maximize patient outcomes. By providing stunning, life-changing results, our practice maintains a reputation of excellence and superiority.

After four years of medical school, five years of general surgery training, three years of plastic surgery residency, one year of plastic surgery fellowship, Dr. Schoemann realized that he had strayed from my original purpose in going to medical school: to help people. On July 1st, 2012 he flew to Guwahati India and realized that purpose once again by becoming the medical director of Operation Smile’s Comprehensive Cleft Care Centre.

As the medical director, it was his responsibility to ensure that the 2,500 surgeries that were performed throughout the year were performed in a safe and sufficient manner. In addition to overseeing the day-to-day operations of the center, he performed approximately 350 surgeries myself, directly impacting the lives of numerous people. Seeing the excitement and delight in the eyes of a patient when they first looked into a mirror after surgery was always the best part of his day. The Guwahati Comprehensive Cleft Centre is Operation Smile’s flagship hospital devoted to the treatment of children and adults with cleft lips and/or palates and is one of the largest centers in the world.

Our team has a heart for helping others and our Practice Coordinator, Valerie Watt serves other outreaches such as Dream City, Ninos de Fe, and Fill a Belly.

Why should I join this cause?

HUMAN TRAFFICKING. It’s modern-day slavery. And it’s believed to be the third-largest criminal activity in the world.

  • There are an estimated 40 million victims of human trafficking, globally. This includes sex exploitation and forced labor.1
  • 71% of victims of human trafficking in North America are trafficked for sexual exploitation.2
  • 25% of global victims are children under 18.1
  • The human trafficking industry counts $150 Billion in profits each year with $99 Billion coming from commercial sex exploitation.1
  • Only 1% of individuals trafficked will be rescued.1

Before their lives have even begun, many young children are forced to endure horrors beyond imagination. This is not something that only happens in some distant part of the world.

Human Trafficking Hits Home

Yes, this nightmare exists here in our own backyard! Here are some shocking statistics.

  • According to the University of San Diego Human Trafficking Study, sex trafficking is San Diego's second-largest underground economy after drug trafficking. This represents $810 million in annual revenue.3
  • Reports of internet crime against juveniles in San Diego County, which mostly involves sharing illicit photos of minors, which are then shared, trafficked, to others, have tripled since the pandemic.4
  • 3,000-8,000 victims are trafficked in San Diego each year.5
According to the FBI, San Diego is ranked one of the 13 worst regions in the United States for human trafficking.5
  • Trans border criminal networks are involved in  trafficking minors and adults between Mexico and the United States.3
  • At least 110 gangs are involved in the commercial exploitation of people (CSEP) and in San Diego, 85% of sex trafficking pimps or facilitators interviewed were involved in a gang.3
